EVERYONE CONTRIBUTES. AUSTRALIA THRIVES.
Rethinking Australia’s Tax System for a Fairer Future
Who’s Really Carrying the Load?
Australia’s income tax system places a heavy burden on middle-income earners—the true working class. While the top 15% of earners pay 68% of all net income tax, 21% of Australians pay none. Many of these are not low-income or pensioners, but high earners using legal tax minimisation strategies.
Income Tax vs GST: A Tilted System
Middle-income Australians are taxed on every dollar they earn, while others reduce their taxable income through trusts and deductions. In contrast, GST is broad-based and harder to avoid. In 2023–24, GST raised $84.9 billion, while income tax raised over $303 billion—mostly from middle-income earners.
A Bold Proposal: Replace Income Tax with a 20% GST
Imagine a system where everyone contributes. A 20% GST could maintain national revenue, reduce the burden on workers, and ensure fairness by taxing spending rather than income manipulation.
Protecting Low-Income Australians
Most low-income earners receive government support. These payments can be indexed to inflation and adjusted to offset the increased cost of living under a higher GST, ensuring no one is left behind.
